No it's not the stupid hours, the fact that it's almost like I'm on-call, or the fact that it's clearly not just a job but rather a lifestyle.
No, it's having to monitor the anti-Israel events, having to scour the interent for anti-Israel images etc. At the beginning of the year I had to go to these events and it was hard. It was hard to hear such harsh criticism of Israel by people who are clearly not friendly at all to the State. But all this time I thought it was just a matter of tactics. Not that they are right. But perhaps there are things that they are not wrong about. Look, I don't claim that Israel is above reproach, it certainly has done some things wrong BUT to claim that it is the only state in the world that deserves such harsh criticism is almost laughable. Canada, the US, the UK- certainly not perfect countries. And if someone wants to know if apartheid actually exists in this world still, you only have to go so far as some of Israel's neighbouring states to see the harsh gender apartheid that occurs there. Look at gay rights, rights for rape victims and in some of these countries rights of non-Muslim citizens- it's almost appalling. This of course does not excuse Israel, but to hold it at such a high standard while blantantly ignoring the violiations of basic human rights by some of it's neighbours is irresponsible and suspect.
At one time, I began to actually think that perhaps it was me taking the crazy pills (a la Mugatu) maybe I was so blinded by my loyalty to Israel that I could not accept the criticisms. But I sit at these events, I troll the internet and I pay attention and listen to their arguments and I now start to think that perhaps everyone else is taking the crazy pills- the university campuses allowing this on their campuses as an exercise in free speech amazes me. These anti-Israel events are NOT just about criticizing or trying to "free" a people- they now proudly admit to being anti-Zionists. They say"Israel does not have a right to exist" or my favourite yet, "all Jews are Zionists and all Zionists are Racists...." it sure doesn't leave too much for the imagination now does it? This is what I have to sit through, this is what I have to hear, this is what makes me stronger. I wish there could be dialogue, because with dialogue there could be space for change, there could be people working together to create a better Israel. But trust me, they tried before I was there, we've tried while I'm in this position and I'm sure Hillel will keep trying long after I'm gone to partner with the likes of SPHR, PSC, GRAIN, ASC... the list goes on.... and they are not interested as they've said themselves (and now I'm paraphrasing) we don't want a peaceful resolution. It's not about a two state solution for them. For them it's about "eliminating Zionism"- and one can only wonder if 'all Zionist are racists and all Jews are Zionists' is it really just about Israel or is it more then that? [and once again, I've been there, I've seen it, I've heard it, I've tried to deny it- this is a first hand account- they walk that fine antisemitism line time and again].
